Centro Caribe Sports Mourns the Passing of Basketball Legend José “Piculín” Ortiz
Centro Caribe Sports, on behalf of its President Luis Mejía Oviedo and its Executive Board, deeply regrets the passing of José “Piculín” Ortiz, one of the most emblematic figures in basketball across the region.
Ortiz, a legend and leading figure in Puerto Rican sport, represented his country in four editions of the Olympic Games and played a fundamental role in the development of basketball in Central America and the Caribbean. Among his most significant achievements was his key contribution to Puerto Rico’s gold medal victory at the 1993 Central American and Caribbean Games in Ponce, where he was also named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
His career included participation in international leagues, and he became the first Puerto Rican selected in the NBA Draft in 1987.
Throughout his career, he also left his mark on European basketball, with standout performances for clubs such as Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. His career was recognized with his induction into the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2019.
“Piculín” Ortiz will be remembered for his effort, discipline, leadership, and the pride with which he represented Puerto Rico and the entire region.
Centro Caribe Sports extends its deepest condolences to his family, friends, and to all the people of Puerto Rico.
His legacy will remain in sport forever.
