Baseball: A Passion That Unites the Caribbean

In the Caribbean, baseball is much more than a nine-inning game. It is a tradition passed down from generation to generation, a passion that comes alive in every neighborhood and a sport that has found in the Central American and Caribbean Games one of its most important stages for showcasing the region’s talent.

Since becoming part of the Games programme in 1926, baseball has produced memorable rivalries and unforgettable moments. Over the years, the tournament has become a showcase where national teams have reflected the growth of their development programmes and the talent of their players. Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Mexico and Venezuela are among the nations that have made the greatest contribution to the development of baseball in the region, producing generations of players who have strengthened the sport’s rich tradition.

The history of baseball in Central America and the Caribbean has also been shaped by athletes who achieved international recognition. Cuba’s Omar Linares, widely regarded as one of the greatest amateur baseball players of all time; Puerto Rico’s Roberto Alomar, a member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame; Venezuela’s Luis Sojo, renowned for his international career; and the Dominican Republic’s Miguel Tejada and Robinson Canó represent the talent that has distinguished Caribbean baseball and inspired generations of players.

The Dominican Republic has also built a remarkable legacy at the Central American and Caribbean Games. With three gold medals, four silver medals and four bronze medals, the host nation has established itself as one of the tournament’s traditional contenders and, as the host of Santo Domingo 2026, will look to add another chapter to its medal record in front of its home crowd.

Over the years, new talent has emerged, national teams have continued to raise their competitive level and every edition has introduced new protagonists. Yet the essence of the sport remains unchanged: the excitement of a timely hit, the strategy from the pitcher’s mound and the pride of representing one’s country.

Baseball’s story will continue at Santo Domingo 2026, when the Quisqueya Juan Marichal Stadium hosts competition from July 31 to August 7. Eight national teams—the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Panama, Colombia, Nicaragua and Curaçao—will compete for the regional title. Every pitch, every run and every victory will add another chapter to the history of one of the most iconic sports at the Central American and Caribbean Games.
