16 athletes from five member countries of Centro Caribe Sports will compete in the Grand Prix Portugal 2023, first stop of the International Judo Federation (IJF) World Judo Tour, from January 27 to 29.

The judo fighters who will see action at the Almada Municipal Sports Complex come from Colombia, Dominican Republic, Haití, Jamaica, and Venezuela.

A total of 550 athletes from 81 nations are registered in this first Judo Grand Prix of the year, to accumulate points towards the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Below is the list of Centro Caribe Sports member countries and their athletes who will compete in the Grand Prix Portugal 2023:

Colombia – Juan Hernández, -66kg.

Dominican Republic – Antonio Tornal, -73kg; Moira Morillo, +78kg; Medickson del Orbe, -81kg; José Nova Alcántara, +100kg.

Haití – Philippe Abel Metellus, -73kg.

Jamaica – Steven Moore, +100kg.

Venezuela – María Gímenez, -48kg; Fabiola Díaz, -52kg; Ivan Salas, -60kg; Anriquelis Barrios, -63kg; Willis García, -66kg; Andrés Pariche, -66kg; Elvismar Rodríguez, -70kg; Amarantha Urdaneta, +78kg; y Luis Amezquita, +100kg.

Of the 16 judocas who will represent the Central American and Caribbean region, Medickson del Orbe, Anriquelis Barrios and Elvismar Rodríguez, are the champions of their respective divisions of the XXIII Central American and Caribbean Games, held in Barranquilla in 2018.

On their side, José Nova (silver and bronze), Moira Morillo (bronze), María Gímenez (bronze), Luis Amezquita (bronze), were medalists of Baranquilla 2018.

These athletes are expected to compete in the XXIV Central American and Caribbean Games, San Salvador 2023, where the judo competition will be staged at the Gimnasio Nacional José Adolfo Pineda, from July 4 to 7.
