Oct 17, 2024

SANTO DOMINGO.- After the start of the U-17 Women’s World Cup in Santo Domingo and as a sub venue in Santiago, the President of Centro Caribe Sports, Luis Mejia, valued the confidence given by FIFA to the Dominican Republic with this event.

Sixteen delegations divided into four groups of four teams are looking for the trophy defended by the Spanish national team, where three of the teams are part of the member countries of Centro Caribe Sports, such as Colombia, Mexico and the locals.

FIFA awarded the hosting of this tournament for the eighth edition of a Women’s World Cup in this category, highlighting the fact that it is the first time that the Dominican Republic hosts a championship of this magnitude.

“With all its splendor, FIFA is in the country. Thanks to all its staff for the trust they have shown in giving us the responsibility of staging this event. It is now our turn to celebrate this great honor,” said the IOC Member after the match in Santiago.

In addition, Mejia highlighted the great organization that was experienced during the start of the World Cup at the Cibao FC Stadium, where he witnessed the match where the Ecuadorian team beat the Dominican team two goals to zero.

“This scenario was prepared as FIFA usually does in its high-level tournaments, obviously, this is a World Cup where the best women’s teams of the U-17 category meet,” said the President of the regional sports organization.

North Korea (2008 and 2016) and Spain (2018 and 2022) are the only teams to win two championship titles, while South Korea (2010), France (2012) and Japan (2014) complete the list of champions of this tournament.

By 2025, the U-17 Women’s World Cup will be held every year, according to FIFA, in order to open up the development of women’s soccer.
