CANOC CELEBRATES ITS FIRST AWARDS

PROVIDENCE, TURKS AND CAICOS.- The Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees (CANOC) celebrated last Saturday its first sports awards to recognize athletes, leaders, personalities, technicians and member committees.

The event held at the Beaches Turks and Caicos Resort Villages & Spa, was attended by several members of the Executive Board of Centro Caribe Sports, including the President Luis Mejia Oviedo, and the President of Panam Sports, Neven Ilic.

Julien Alfred, champion in the 100 meters and runner-up in the 200 meters, was the winner of two awards, being the most decorated of the night.

Alfred, from St. Lucia, won the Breakthrough of the Year award, which recognizes the athlete for having won a first continental medal or in a multisport event for her country; and Personality of the Year, Female.

The Caribbean sprinter won the first medal for Saint Lucia, winning the 100m at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Thea LaFond, Triple Jump champion, also won the Breakthrough of the Year award, after winning the first podium for Dominica at Paris 2024.

Mijain López, five-time Olympic wrestling champion who retired as an active athlete at the last Olympic Games, was honored as Personality of the Year in the men’s category at the CANOC Sports Awards.

The Dominican Republic won three awards, where the women’s volleyball team and the men’s soccer team were honored as Caribbean Team of the Year in both categories.

A third award was the Caribbean National Olympic Committee of the Year.

OTHER CANOC AWARDS

Here’s a breakdown of the other awards given out on Saturday night at the CANOC Sports Awards.

Caribbean Journalist of the Year: Anmar Goodridge-Boyce.

IOC & CANOC Sustainability Award: Erskine Simmons, Secretary General of the Barbados Olympic Association.

Caribbean Distinguished Service: Judy Simmons, Bermuda Olympic Committee, posthumously.

Caribbean Patron: Honorable Galmo Williams, Turks and Caicos Islands.

Quadrennial Caribbean Lifetime Achievement Award: Steve Stoute, Barbados.
