Oct 29, 2024

Sara Rosario has been re-elected President of the Puerto Rico Olympic Committee in the elections held on October 17 at the Olympic House located in Old San Juan.

This will be Rosario’s fourth term at the helm of Puerto Rican Olympic sport, with several members of the Executive Committee making their debut as Board managers.

The highest ranking legislative body of the national Olympic organization was composed as follows: Sara Rosario, reelected President for a fourth term; first Vice President, Eng. Víctor Ruiz; second Vice President, Iván Santos; secretary general, Lcdo. Carlos Beltrán; deputy secretary general, Lcda. Betsmara Cruz; treasurer Humberto Torres; and deputy treasurer, Mildred Colón.

The election for the position of deputy general secretary was the only one to go to a second round, since the vote between the two candidates ended by one point in favor of the basketball delegate, Mr. Yum Ramos (21-20) over Ms. Cruz, the public interest delegate.

However, the also president of the Basketball Federation withdrew his candidacy, leaving the way clear for Cruz to become the new COPUR deputy secretary general.

The Nominating Commission for the Executive Committee election process was led by public interest delegate, Ivelisse Echevarría; boxing delegate, José “Chiky” Laureano; and softball delegate, Tommy Velázquez; who reported on the candidates for election: president (a) Rosario, public interest member; first vice-president, Ing. Ruiz (canoeing delegate); second vice president, Iván Santos (table tennis delegate); and Carlos Santiago, public interest delegate; secretary general, Lcdo. Carlos Beltrán, public interest member and Fernando Delgado, swimming delegate; assistant secretary Lcdo. Yum Ramos, basketball delegate; and Lcda. Betsmara Cruz, public interest member; treasurer Torres, tennis delegate; and assistant treasurer Colón, equestrian delegate.

The same members of the Nominating Committee were ratified as members of the Scrutiny Commission.

Bowling delegate, Randolph Raldiris, made the motion that the candidates who were running alone for the offices of president, first vice-president, treasurer and vice-treasurer be elected “viva voce”. The motion was seconded by several Plenary delegates including Ramos, the basketball delegate.

Thus, Rosario was re-elected for her fourth term as president together with her work team of the last three Olympic cycles: canoeing delegate, Ruiz, for first vice-president; tennis delegate, Torres, for treasurer; and assistant treasurer, Colón, who is the equestrian delegate.

The election process was for the candidatures of general secretary, Beltrán and Delgado; general undersecretary, Ramos and Cruz; and second vice-president, Santos and Santiago.
