ALCÁNTARA AND PINALES SECURE MEDALS FOR THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC IN OLYMPIC BOXING

Dominicans Yunior Alcántara and Cristian Pinales, achieved victories on Friday in the quarterfinals of boxing at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, and secured the first medals for their country in this sporting event.

With these medals in their hands, the Dominican delegation extends to six consecutive Olympic Games with at least two medals on the podium.

Alcantara defeated Spain’s Rafael Lozano by split decision, after handling the fight as he pleased, and leading the European to make wrong decisions during the fight.

The 20-year-old will face Frenchman Billal Bennama next Sunday in the semifinals of the category, starting at 12:20 p.m. (6:20 a.m., DOM).

Yunior made his debut in the Round of 16 with a bye, and in that stage he defeated Azerbaijan’s Nijat Huseynov by unanimous decision.

On his side, Pinales won a unanimous decision over Gabrijel Veocic of Croatia, who dominated from the first bell the fight in the ring.

Cristian’s first three fights (Round of 16, Round of 16, Round of 16 and Quarterfinals) have been defined unanimously, showing a technical and fundamental superiority against his opponents.

This Sunday, August 4, the native of La Romana will face Kazakhstan’s Nurbek Oralbay, in a fight scheduled for 12:52 p.m. (6:52 a.m., DOM).
