BAHAMAS AND DOMINICAN REPUBLIC WIN AT START OF PARIS 2024 OLYMPIC QUALIFYING TOURNAMENT
The Bahamas and the Dominican Republic won on the first day of the Men’s Olympic Basketball Qualifying Tournaments for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, offering a respite for these teams due to the format of the competitions.
In Valencia, Spain, the Bahamians defeated Finland 96 – 85, thanks to the quartet of Buddy Hield, Valdez Edgecombe Jr., DeAndre Ayton and Eric Gordon, who combined to score 79 points.
Hield led the Caribbean offense with 24 points, scoring six three-pointers with six rebounds, while Edgecombe Jr. contributed 20 tallies.
On his side, DeAndre scored 19 points with nine rebounds and Gordon added 16.
This Wednesday, on the second day of the event, the Bahamas will face Poland and must win to secure Group B and qualify directly to the semifinals of the event.
Also in Europe, but in El Pireos, Greece, the Dominican Republic defeated Egypt 90 – 77, a team led by the good performance of young Jean Montero.
The native of the Dominican capital scored 17 points with five rebounds and four assists, escorted by NBA player Christopher Duarte, who added 14 points with six rebounds.
Ángel Núñez contributed 11 units to the winning cause, also grabbed nine rebounds with two steals, and Víctor Liz had 12 points.
The team coached by Néstor “Che” García, will face Greece in the second round of the second day to be held on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Mexico could not contain the Lithuanian offense, losing
, in the beginning of the road to Paris 2024.
Joshua Ibarra was the best offensive player for Mexico, scoring 18 points with six rebounds and four assists, accompanied by Gabriel Giron who added 15 points and grabbed six boards, while Fabian Jaimes scored 13 and Karim Rodriguez 11.
Paul Stoll had a double-double, scoring nine points with 12 assists.
