BELONY TO COMPETE IN PARIS 2024 AFTER A DECADE OF SACRIFICE

Jun 30, 2024

“All my life I have dreamed of participating in the Olympic Games and now I am weeks away from becoming an Olympian,” with these words began the text of Haiti’s Cédrick Belony, after learning that he will make his debut in Paris 2024.

When he steps into the ring, he will become the third pugilist to participate in consecutive Olympic Games for the Haitian delegation, and it would be the sixth time in the history of the small country to compete in Olympic boxing.

The history of this sport for Haiti began in the 1976 edition of Montreal, when three boxers competed, placing in important positions, such as fifth place for Yves Jeudy in the minus 60 kilograms (-60 kg) category; ninth place for Wesly Felix in the minus 67 kg division; and 25th place for Siergot Sully in the minus 63.5 kg division.

After his qualification, Cédrick indicated that the sacrifice he has dedicated to boxing for a decade to represent Haiti in an Olympic event, has been rewarded with this confirmation to be in France this summer.

Belony has obtained the quota for the Universality in the 80 kg, where he will show the level he has, for his pride and his country.

In addition to those already mentioned, Haiti was in Athens 2004, represented by Andre Berto in the minus 69 kg category; in Beijing 2008, with Azea Augustama in the minus 81 kg division; in Rio 2016 by Richardson Hitchins in the minus 64 kg; and Tokyo 2020 with Darrelle Valsaint Jr. in the 69-75 kg category.

In addition to Jeudy’s fifth place, another great result that Haiti has achieved in the Olympic Games was in the Tokyo 2020 version, when Valsaint Jr. also achieved a fifth place in this sport.
