BRYAN INSCRIBES THE NAME OF EL SALVADOR IN OLYMPIC SURFING

May 08, 2024

The surfer Bryan Perez, became a few days ago the first athlete from El Salvador to compete in the Olympic Games surfing, when he debuts in Paris 2024, in the waves of Tehaupo’o, Tahiti, from July 27 to August 4.

Honored to be the first in his sport, he says it’s a dream come true at 24 years old, and that he worked day and night to make it to an Olympic event, after his father introduced him to surfing at a very young age.

“I remember when I was taking care of cars, and now I am an Olympic athlete”, were part of the statements of the native of the community of Rio de la Playa Punta Roca, La Libertad, when telling about his experience of qualifying for the HUELLAS project of Centro Caribe Sports.

This sport has just debuted in the last Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020, so the Salvadoran knows that he has taken a big step in his sports career, by obtaining the ticket to Paris 2024.

Being the second athlete from El Salvador classified for these fairs, out of three that have a ticket to Paris 2024, together with Uriel Canjura of Badminton, and Enrique Arathoon of Sailing, the Central American nation is looking for the classification of other athletes, especially in athletics, which still does not close its qualifying process until June 30.

BRYAN’S FOOTSTEPS TO PARIS 2024

His steps in the high level of sport began in his process for the Pan American Games of Lima 2019, event in which he won the bronze medal.

Upon conquering this medal, Bryan wanted to challenge himself with other events and therefore, he created a “Gofundme” to participate in the circuits of the World Surf Tour, and then sought to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Although he was unable to qualify for the Olympics on that occasion, for the native of La Libertad, it was not an obstacle to fulfill his dreams and, in the Central American and Caribbean Games San Salvador 2023, he won a bronze medal, to add to the joys enjoyed by the host country of the oldest regional games in the world.

BRYAN PROCESS TOWARDS THE OLYMPIC QUOTA

The Olympic Committee of El Salvador received the notification from the International Surfing Association (ISA) last April 24, indicating that the surfer has been selected through the Universality route, after exhausting the internal processes of the ISA.

“I feel very proud of all the work I have been doing during all these years. With God’s help and a lot of training, everything is possible and I want to transmit this message to the youth of El Salvador,” said an excited Bryan.
