This Tuesday, July 2, begins the last step for the men’s basketball qualification to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, with the action of four Qualifying Tournaments, spread in four different countries, where four delegations from the Central American and Caribbean region, compete for one of those tickets.

Bahamas, Dominican Republic, Mexico and Puerto Rico, are the quintets that are going after the longed-for quota to Paris 2024, to accompany the first eight teams that are already installed in the Olympic Games, among them France (host country), Canada, United States, Germany, Serbia, Australia, Japan and South Sudan, who qualified from the World Championship held in the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia in 2023.

The Bahamian national team includes three NBA players, DeAndre Ayton, Buddy Hield and Eric Gordon, who have already represented the Bahamas in the qualifying processes to reach this stage.

The Bahamas will be playing in the Valencia, Spain, where they will face Finland and Poland, as part of the Group B preliminary phase matches. In the same tournament, the teams in Group A are made up of Lebanon, Angola and Spain.

The Dominican Republic’s roster includes new players with a lot of experience in FIBA tournaments, such as Jean Montero and Andres Feliz, both star players in Europe’s ACB, as well as NBA player Christopher Duarte. They also have in their roster veterans Víctor Liz, their captain, and center Eloy Vargas.

The Dominicans will face Egypt and Greece in the preliminary phase of Group B, while Group A is made up of Slovenia, New Zealand and Croatia. This tournament is being played in Piraeus, Greece.

Meanwhile, Mexico and Puerto Rico will be battling for the only place in the championship being held in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Mexicans will face Lithuania and Ivory Coast, while the Puerto Ricans will play against Bahrain and Italy.

During the preliminary phase, each team will play two matches, one against the teams in its bracket in each qualifying tournament, scheduled from July 2 to 4. At the end of this phase, the first two places of each key for each group will play the semifinals, scheduled for Saturday, July 6. Friday, July 5, is a rest day for all teams.

In the semifinals, the first team of Group A will play against the second team of Group B, and vice versa, in each of the four qualifying tournaments for Paris 2024.

The winners of each semifinal will play on Sunday for a ticket to the Olympic Games. The losers will be disqualified from the tournament.

The group stage of men’s basketball in Paris 2024 will be played from July 27 to August 3 at the Pierre Mauroy Stadium, 224 kilometers from the French city. The teams that manage to qualify to the Quarterfinals will move to Paris to play at the Bercy Arena, in the center of France.

Australia and the winner of the tournament in Spain will be the first match of these Games, followed by Germany against Japan, then France will play against the winner of the Latvia match, and the first day will close with the champion in Greece against Canada.

The United States has won the last four Olympic Games in men’s basketball, with a total of 16 Olympic titles in the history of the sport.
