Santo Domingo – During the recording of the television program Hoy Mismo, Dr. José Joaquín Puello Herrera, director of the Ciudad Sanitaria “Doctor Luis Eduardo Aybar,” announced that the Clinical and Surgical Hospital within this complex will serve as the official medical center for the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo.

The renowned neurosurgeon explained that this designation reflects the hospital’s high-quality standards, modern technology, and comprehensive care capacity, making it one of the most advanced medical centers in the entire region.

“In every sporting event, there are always athletes who get injured, suffer fractures, or experience cardiac emergencies. That’s why it’s essential to have a hospital equipped with all medical specialties—and this one meets all those requirements,” stated Dr. Puello Herrera.

The Clinical and Surgical Hospital is part of the Ciudad Sanitaria complex, which consists of 13 buildings—seven of them medical—and includes 120 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds, making it one of the largest and most modern ICUs in the Caribbean. The hospital offers 28 medical specialties, with the exception of radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

The facility also features state-of-the-art operating rooms, a modern imaging center, and specialized units such as the burns unit—with its own operating room, elevator, and dedicated medical equipment—and a stroke care center equipped with cutting-edge technology and highly trained personnel.

Dr. Puello highlighted that the Ciudad Sanitaria regularly receives visits from healthcare professionals from England, Germany, Central America, and the Caribbean who come to learn about its facilities and care models. “Many request authorization to record the intensive care areas because they want to replicate this kind of infrastructure in their countries,” he noted.

With the capacity to treat between 5,000 and 8,000 patients per day, the Clinical and Surgical Hospital of the Ciudad Sanitaria stands as the essential medical pillar for the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games, ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality medical care for athletes, delegations, and visitors from the 37 participating countries.

It is worth noting that the modern facility bears the name “José Joaquín Puello” in honor of the distinguished doctor, who also served as president of Centro Caribe Sports under its former name, ODECABE.
