COC ratifies Roberto León Richards and recognizes Juantorena as Honorary Member
Roberto León Richards was ratified as president of the Cuban Olympic Committee (COC) for the period 2025-2028.
The meeting, which began with a well-deserved tribute to glories and directors who passed away since 2020, recognized the women members of that body, on the occasion of its international day.
The attendees supported with an ovation the proposal to recognize the two-time Olympic champion Alberto Juantorena –until now vice president– with the status of Honorary Life Member, and confirmed José Manuel Peláez and elected María Caridad Colón for those positions.
Richards, who will serve his third term, highlighted the merits of the two-time champion of Montreal 1976, currently affected by health, as an example of a worthy Cuban, athlete and defender of the values of sport.
The inclusion of Yumilka Ruiz Luaces and Tamara Jiménez Castañet in the Executive Committee, which increased the number of women to six, brought other novelties to the work session.
Issues related to the Olympic Solidarity programs of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Panam Sports, the intervention of the main events of the period analyzed and the work of the National Anti-Doping Office of the Republic of Cuba were part of the debate.
In addition, the high performance strategy of Inder (National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation of Cuba) for the 2025-2028 cycle and the Cuban Olympic Committee occupied space in the interventions.
The president of the Cuban Olympic Committee, in a later aside with the press, highlighted the will to work hard, adhering to the principles, in view of the participation in the Olympic Games.
