Cuba Wins Gold and Silver at Nanjing 2025 World Athletics Championships
Cubans Leyanis Pérez and Liadagmis Povea won gold and silver, respectively, in the triple jump, placing their country among the standout performers this Saturday on the second day of the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Nanjing, China.
The 23-year-old Caribbean native clocked 14.93 meters to claim the victory and take the gold medal, her country’s first in the world championship.
In doing so, Leyanis Pérez added to her list of achievements, which also includes a Diamond League title, a silver and bronze medal at outdoor world championships, and several continental titles. She continues her strong campaign in 2025, a year in which she hopes to compete with Yulimar Rojas, one of her most professed dreams.
Fellow countrywoman Liadagmis Povea (14.57) and Spaniard Ana Peleteiro-Compaoré (14.29) took home silver and bronze medals, respectively. Thea Lafond of Dominica, the 2024 Paris Olympic champion, finished fourth after returning from a seven-month postoperative period. The supremacy of Central American and Caribbean athletes in the triple jump is evident this athletics season.
