GOLDEN DEBUT FOR CUBAN ALVAREZ IN BOXING

Cuban boxing has won its first title in these Olympic Games of Paris 2024, with the fists of the debutant Erislandy Alvarez in the 63.5 kilograms division, defeating by split division (3-2) the French Sofiane Oumiha, in a match held at the Roland Garros stadium.

This mythical stage that hosts tennis competitions, has been chosen to be part of these Games in addition to field tennis, and within the sports program boxing was included to take advantage of the space of such an exciting sport.

Alvarez had won his previous bouts by unanimous decision, bouts that include round of 16, round of 16, quarterfinals and semifinals.

For the Cuban delegation, this is the second gold medal in Paris 2024, together with that of the great Mijaín López, who this Tuesday, won his fifth Olympic title, becoming the only athlete to be a five-time Olympic champion in the same individual sport and category.

With this medal, Cuba has five gold medals in this boxing division in its Olympic history, which includes Ángel Herrera in Moscow 1980, as well as Mario Kindelán in Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004 and Andy Cruz in Tokyo 2020.
