HAITI’S OLYMPIC GYMNASTICS TO DEBUT IN PARIS 2024

Jun 11, 2024

“With Lynnzee Brown’s historic qualification in women’s artistic gymnastics for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Haiti will see its twelfth sport debut in the history of the Summer Olympic Games.”

The big news was announced on May 30th, when the International Gymnastics Federation, through its social media channels, informed that the Universality spot in the women’s Artistic category belonged to the Caribbean athlete.

Haiti has competed in athletics, boxing, fencing, judo, shooting, swimming, taekwondo, tennis, weightlifting, and wrestling. Now, it adds a new sport from a new federation, representing a significant advancement for a nation that daily showcases, through its athletes, the resilience that defines great world leaders.

For Haiti, this qualification for Paris 2024 represents the beginning of a goal towards the Los Angeles 2028 edition, where they hope to field a full team, according to Dr. Hans Larsen, President of the Haitian Olympic Committee.

“Our Gymnastics Federation has been working with several young athletes between 15 to 18 years old, aiming to compete in the next Olympic cycle and try to reach Los Angeles with a team, not just with one athlete,” Dr. Larsen commented to Centro Caribe Sports.

Brown, who resides in the United States, was one of the top collegiate gymnasts until she graduated, earning recognition for her achievements during her time as an active athlete in the NCAA, representing the University of Denver.

She excelled in artistic gymnastics from a very young age, reaching “Level 10” at the age of 12 in 2011. From 2012 to 2017, Lynnzee qualified for Nationals five times.

During her collegiate career, she was co-champion of the NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Tournament in 2019, in the floor exercise category, and also won the silver medal in the NCAA Tournament in vault.

After graduating from the University of Denver in 2023 with a degree in Communications Management, she accepted a position as part of the coaching staff for the gymnastics team at Penn State University.

Later on, she began representing Haiti, with the 2023 Pan American Artistic Gymnastics Championships held in Medellin, Colombia, marking her first international experience.

Following that tournament, she continued to carry the flag of Haiti in world-class stages, including the Pan American Championship held in Santa Marta, Colombia, last May.

HAITI AT THE OLYMPIC GAMES

Lynnzee is the first athlete from Haiti officially qualified for Paris 2024, and the delegation awaits confirmation, through universality, of four more athletes.

For the president of the Haitian Olympic Committee, Dr. Larsen, the athletes who will compete in the upcoming Olympic Games represent the hope that his people need.
