The GLORIA Awards organization, led by SSM-Sports Summit Madrid, honored Cuban high jumper Javier Sotomayor with the GLORIA Ibero-American Sports Legend Award. The ceremony will be held this Wednesday, June 18, at the Albéniz Theater in Madrid. It is part of a fair debuting this year and will pay tribute to 20 sports figures and institutions, divided into 13 categories.

Born on October 13, 1967, in Limonar, Matanzas, Sotomayor is one of the greatest icons of world athletics. His world high jump record (2.45 m), set on July 27, 1993, in Salamanca, Spain, remains unbroken after 32 years, cementing his place in the history of the sport. When repeatedly asked when his record will be broken, the Cuban usually responds with a smile and a mysterious: “someday.”

The “Prince of Heights,” Olympic champion in Barcelona 1992 and silver medalist in Sydney 2000, will receive a tribute alongside other prominent figures such as Toni Nadal, Club América of Mexico, Juan Antonio Samaranch Jr., and former Brazilian volleyball player Giba.

The GLORIA Awards were created with the mission of highlighting the social, economic, and cultural impact of sport in Latin America, as well as its potential for future development.
