“Innovations and commitments to gender equality mark the Sports Program of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games”

Juan Guerra CCS – The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has confirmed the Sports Program for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, highlighting a significant increase in opportunities for athletes and a strong commitment to gender equality.

At these Olympic Games, medals will be awarded in 351 events, representing an increase of 22 medal events compared to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. This significant increase reflects the IOC’s commitment to expanding sporting opportunities globally.

The 2028 Olympic Games will feature a total of 10,500 athletes. Within this number, near-equal gender participation is guaranteed, with 5,333 women and 5,167 men competing in 25 mixed events. This balance is a direct reflection of the ongoing efforts toward equal representation in sport. Female athletes will be key players in Paris.

Another notable development is the inclusion of five additional sports in the 2028 program: Baseball/Softball, Cricket, Flag Football, Lacrosse, and Squash. These sports will provide a total of 698 additional spots for athletes, distributed between 322 spots for women and 376 for men.

A historic milestone will be reached in Los Angeles: for the first time, all team sports will have an equal number of women’s and men’s teams. This decision is a major step forward in promoting gender equality within the Olympic arena.

The Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games not only promise to be a celebration of global sport, but also a platform to advance equity and diversity, setting a precedent for future editions of the Games.
