OBS PROGRAM PROMOTES GENDER EQUALITY IN BROADCASTING

Nov 05, 2024

Participants in the “Engineering the Future” program will play a direct role in one of the world’s most complex sports broadcasting projects during the planning phase of the Milano Cortina 2026 broadcast operations.

They will gain hands-on experience in a professional broadcasting environment, learn the latest broadcasting technologies and develop the basic skills needed to succeed in an ever-evolving industry.

Women pursuing studies in broadcast engineering, telecommunications or related fields are encouraged to apply. The internship will begin on January 10, 2025 at the OBS offices in Madrid, Spain. The schedule is designed to accommodate candidates’ academic commitments and the needs of the broadcast engineering department. Applications are open until November 19.

More women speakers at Paris 2024

At the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) reached a milestone in gender equality by allocating equal quotas to female and male athletes, encouraging all stakeholders to advance gender equality in their respective fields.

In the broadcasting sector, the BSO was at the forefront of the fight against gender imbalance, launching several successful programs to maximize opportunities for women in the run-up to Paris 2024.

OBS launched specific programs, such as the Framing the Future program, which trained more than 70 female camera operators in the run-up to Paris 2024, 25 of whom worked at the Games.

The Olympic commentator training program equipped Olympians and Paralympians transitioning to a new career with the necessary skills to commentate, resulting in 15 trainees, including 12 women (80%), working as freelance commentators at Paris 2024.

Although only 26.42% of the 18,438 OBS and media rights holder representatives at Paris 2024 were women, OBS ensured a more balanced team of men and women for venue broadcast operations:

-OBS recruited more women for key broadcast operational roles and increased the number of women on venue production teams, especially in image generation roles.

-Two-thirds of the 42 directors and deputy directors of the BBS broadcast venues were women, compared to 50% for Tokyo 2020. Similarly, two-thirds of the Broadcast Operations Center staff were women.

-37% of OBS commentators at Paris 2024 were women, almost twice as many as at Tokyo 2020.
