SANTO DOMINGO.- The Organizing Committee of the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games, Santo Domingo 2026, made a presentation to the members of the Executive Committee of Centro Caribe Sports, of the work being carried out for the assembly of the great international sporting event.
The activity took place in the Salón Las Carreras of the Holiday Inn hotel in the capital city and was headed by José P. Monegro, President of the Santo Domingo 2026 Games Organizing Committee; Felipe Vicini, first Vice President; Carolina Mejía, mayor of the National District; Felipe Vicini, first Vice President; Mercedes Canalda, treasurer; Fernando Langa and Carlos Iglesias, members.
Also present were Aristides Fernandez Zucco, liaison of the coordinating commission of the sub-venue of the San Salvador 2023 Games; Thomás Polanco, Nelson Ramírez, from the technical direction of Santo Domingo 2026.
The members of the Executive Committee of Centro Caribe Sports who were present were Steve Stoute (Honorary President); Jimena Saldaña, 1st Vice President of Centro Caribe Sports; Eduardo Alvarez, general secretary; Camilo Amado, treasurer; Ruperto Herrera, 2nd member; and Angel Morales, 4th member.
Using audiovisual resources, Monegro presented in a precise and detailed manner the Organizing Committee’s actions for the staging of the 2026 event.
He also presented the progress achieved in the rehabilitation of the facilities for the seven sports of the San Salvador 2023 Games, for which the country will serve as a sub-venue.
Equestrian, canoeing, taekwondo, modern pentathlon, skeet shooting, racquetball and field hockey will be the sports of San Salvador 2023 to be played on Dominican soil.
He informed that in field hockey a new field will be installed, which has already been contracted with the factory and that in the meantime progress is being made in other areas to install said field as soon as it arrives in the country.
He said that in canoeing the bathymetry has already been contracted and that in the course of the week the bidding process will be uploaded with the appropriate resources for the track.
He said that the equestrian works are well advanced and mentioned the presence in the country of a track designer, who is accompanying the federation of that sport.
In racquetball, the facilities are being refurbished and it was decided to change the court, because the floor has been there since 2003 and it was decided not to take risks and replace the court with a new one to be used for the Santo Domingo 2026 Games. It is expected to be ready at least one month before the event.
“In taekwondo, we have decided to hold it at the Volleyball Pavilion, which is in optimal conditions,” said Monegro and added that the tatami was purchased with the 2026 specifications and that the apparel was validated by the International Federation.
Regarding the modern pentathlon, he said that agreements were reached to acquire the equipment and that the facilities to be used are ready. One of them is the Olympic swimming pool, which is in optimal conditions, as well as fencing and a play adjacent to the pavilion of that sport, for laser shooting.
Monegro informed that three hotels will be available to accommodate the athletes and the required personnel.
The skeet shooting and equestrian athletes will stay at a hotel on the route to these two facilities.
Another hotel will be the Dominican Concord, located seven minutes away from the facilities and the field hockey athletes will be accommodated at the Customs Club hotel, with a capacity for 300 people, located five minutes away from the arena.
The President of the Organizing Committee informed that a colonel of the National Police is coordinating the security arrangements.
In this regard, he added that perimeter security will be provided by Armed Forces personnel and specialized security will work at the hotels.
He revealed that internet services are already being contracted, taking advantage of the country’s good connectivity.
Only three facilities outside the city do not have fiber optics, but work is being done to find adequate solutions.
