SANTO DOMINGO HAS BEEN KEY TO ANA SOTO’S QUALIFICATION FOR PARIS 2024

Jun 26, 2024

It will be her second Olympic Games and Ana Waleska Soto Abril of Guatemala, highlights that Santo Domingo has become a special place on the road to Paris 2024.

She highlighted that in 2023, during the Central American and Caribbean Games, San Salvador 2023, the Dominican Republic hosted the sport of Shotgun Shooting as a sub-host; it helped her to regain her confidence for last year’s events.

Ana got her ticket to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games at the Americas Championship last April, at the Santo Domingo Shooting Range, the same venue of the sub-host of the San Salvador 2023 Games.

“I won the gold and with it the qualification to my second Olympic Games. I worked hard for it, since last year, I always made my best effort,” said Soto in a conversation for the HUELLAS project.

The qualification of Ana, a shotgun shooter, in the Trap modality, represents a big step in her sports career.

HISTORICAL IN THE GUATEMALA SHOOTING

Along with Adriana Ruano, they were the first women shotgun shooters to compete for their country in the Olympic Games. Both were at Tokyo 2020, and will also be at Paris 2024.

For Ruano, the qualification to the next event came first, when she won the Pan American Games of Santiago 2023, held in Chile. In that sporting event, Ana Soto won the silver medal.

“The rule of this event (Pan American Games) was that two athletes from the same country could not compete for tickets to Paris, so the quota was given to the bronze medal winner (Rachel Tozier, USA),” revealed the Guatemalan athlete.

FROM SOFTBALL TO SHOOTING

During the conversation, Ana shared with Centro Caribe Sports about her first love in sports, which was baseball, who commented that since she was a child she played that discipline, even in local tournaments with the boys.

As she grew up, she had to lean towards softball, so much so that she represented Guatemala as a pitcher in the Central American and Caribbean Games, Mayagüez 2010, winning the bronze medal on that occasion.

For the Veracruz 2014 edition of the Regional Games, Ana was registered in two sports: softball and shooting, winning a silver medal in the latter sport.

The shooting sport is scheduled from July 27 to August 5 at the Chaterauroux Shooting Center.
