Shelly Ann Frayser Pryce at the Tokyo 2025 World Athletics Championships
By Juan Guerra|| The Tokyo 2025 World Athletics Championships will be held from September 13-21, 2025, with the participation of 2,000 of the world’s best athletes from 200 countries. The ever-consistent Jamaican athlete Shelly-Ann-Frayser Pryce will compete. Her participation will take place at the Jamaican National Championships. The 39-year-old Caribbean gazelle achieved a time of 10.91 in the 100 meters, beating the qualifying time of 11.07 and placing third. Tina Clayton was crowned champion of the trials with a time of 10.81, and Shericka Jackson took second place with a time of 10.88.
Olympic Successes
The “Pocket Rocket,” nicknamed for her small stature (1.52 m) and explosive starts, has had a brilliant athletic career, winning eight Olympic medals: three gold, four silver, and one bronze in five Olympic Games (2008-2024). She won gold in the 100 meters at Beijing 2008 and London 2012, becoming the first Caribbean woman to win the 100 meters and the third to defend her title. At Tokyo 2020 she won silver in the 100 meters (held in 2021) and bronze at Rio 2016, despite a toe injury. She also contributed to Jamaica’s medal haul in the 4x100m relay, including golds in 2012 and 2020.
The Record-Breaking Woman at World Championships
Her record is unprecedented, with five world titles in the 100m (2009, 2013, 2015, 2019, 2022), more than any other sprinter, male or female. She also won gold in the 200m and 4x100m relay at Moscow 2013, accumulating a total of 14 World Championship medals (10 gold, 4 silver). At 35, in 2022, she became the oldest sprinter to win a world title.
Her best time in the 100 meters is 10.60 seconds (2021), making her the third fastest woman in history, behind Florence Griffith-Joyner (10.49s) and Elaine Thompson-Herah (10.54s). She also has a record of 21.94s in the 200 meters. Her example fills us with anticipation to see her at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. It will be one of the challenges for the legendary Jamaican athlete to continue adding medals to her sporting career.
