SURINAME BADMINTON RETURNS TO OLYMPIC GAMES IN PARIS 2024

Jun 30, 2024

Sören Opti has become a sports icon in Suriname, thanks to the great contributions he has made to his country through badminton, competing at the highest levels in the world, such as the Olympic Games.

Qualified again to the most coveted tournament for athletes to be played this summer, Opti will compete in Paris 2024 after missing the Tokyo 2020 edition of the Olympic Games, held in 2021, for having tested positive for COVID-19.

Flag bearer at the Opening Ceremony in Rio 2016 of his delegation, in his Olympic debut, Sören is one of seven athletes from the continent in the men’s badminton, being a great recognition to his career.

In addition, along with Kevin Cordón of Guatemala, Uriel Canjura of El Salvador and Luis Ramón Garrido of Mexico, he represents the member countries of the Central American and Caribbean region, affiliated to Centro Caribe Sports.

PARIS 2024, THE REVENGE

The Parisian appointment could be the revenge for Sören, due to his involuntary absence in Tokyo 2020 because of the pandemic, and he has set his sights on delivering a good tournament.

Suriname has three athletes qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where Opti will be accompanied, so far, by Jaïr Tjon En Fa in cycling, Keirin and Sprint, and Renzo Tjon-A-Joe in swimming.

OLYMPIC SCHEDULE FOR BADMINTON SURINAME

Olympic badminton in Paris 2024 will be played at the La Chapelle arena, located in the French city, from July 27 to August 5.
