The Dominican Republic women’s volleyball team battled for more than two hours against Italy in their first match of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, but could not celebrate the victory.

The “Queens of the Caribbean”, fell in four sets against the Italians, owners of the number 1 in the world ranking. The score ended 25-19, 24-26, 25-21 and 25-18.

Gaila Gonzalez with 20 points was the most outstanding player in a Dominican team that committed 38 errors versus 18 of the Europeans and will now have to make adjustments to face their next match.

Attacker Yonkaira Pena and center Jineiry Martinez also had double-digit production with 12-point performances in the first duel of Group C of the women’s Olympic competition, which was played at South Paris Arena 1.

“I thought we played a good game, but we struggled to keep the rhythm and made too many mistakes,” Gonzalez said after Sunday’s match. “This is something we will have to change to get the wins we need in the next few games.”

“We did a great job to win the second set coming from behind. But Italy is a very strong team, we managed to take an advantage. This gave us confidence and we hope to build from there”, she added.

The Queens of the Caribbean are in their fourth participation in the Olympic Games. It will be the first in a row (Athens 2004, London 2012 and Tokyo 2020).

We will have to wait a few days for the next match of the Dominicans, who will return to the court on Thursday to face Turkey in search of a victory that will give them points to improve their position in the 11th place of the world ranking.
