The Golden Cuevas
The roof of the Asunción Aquatic Center shone golden with Mexico’s perfect dive. Sisters Mía and Lía Cueva, just 14 years old, were crowned champions at the 2025 Second Junior Pan American Games, showing that the future of diving already has a name and surname.
With a routine that combined precision, courage, and admirable composure for their age, the twins achieved a total score of 289.32, beating the United States duo and securing the Pan American gold medal.
Each entry into the water was accompanied by applause and amazement in the stands, where the excitement of witnessing the birth of two legends was palpable.
But the story of these teenagers doesn’t stop there. Just a few days ago, at their first senior World Championships, they also amazed the world on the synchronized diving board by winning the bronze medal. Their impeccable timing and courage in executing a highly difficult dive, the three-and-a-half front flip in position B, placed them on the historic podium, becoming the youngest world medalists in Mexican history.
“An exceptional performance for her age,” the judges remarked, while in the stands her family, including her sister Suri, also a diver, celebrated with tears and hugs.

Regarding the Mexican delegation, she is full of praise: “It’s a delegation with great potential, but also already a reality. Angela, our Paris 2024 Olympic medalist, is here, along with many athletes who are emerging. We’ll see them in Lima, at the Central American Games. It’s a time of growth. They’re hungry to fulfill their dreams and goals.”
In her role as a guide, Ale is excited to see familiar faces. “I’m excited to see my teammates. Some I trained with, others I competed with. Seeing them now from this place also inspires me.”
The two-time Olympic diving medalist sends a clear message: “Support these kids who have a lot of talent, who are dreaming big. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, but you always learn. We must always get up and return to represent our country with great honor.”
The Asunción 2025 Junior Pan American Games will be held from August 10 to 23, bringing together more than 4,000 athletes from 41 countries across the continent. This event represents a key step on the path to Santo Domingo 2026, Lima 2027, and Los Angeles 2028, and is a fundamental platform for the development of youth sports.
