Werson breaks 33-year-old indoor triple jump record
PARAMARIBO — With a distance of 15.64 meters, 23-year-old
Jemarance Domigill Werson of the Marwina athletics club has set a new
national indoor triple jump record. He achieved this feat on Sunday
during the fourth South American Indoor Championships in
Cochabamba, Bolivia, the Surinamese Athletics Federation (SAB)
reported on Monday.

The previous indoor record had stood for over three decades. Former
Yellow Birds athlete Gregory Lede had been the record holder since
February 15, 1992, when he jumped 15.13 meters at the Dutch Indoor
Championships in The Hague. Werson surpassed that mark on his
second attempt with a jump of 15.16 meters, having opened with 15.06
meters. After a foul on his third attempt, he made his best jump of 15.64
meters on his fourth try. He later recorded 15.24 meters, before his final
attempt was invalid. His 15.64-meter jump earned him seventh place
overall among nine competitors.
At the Estadio de Atletismo del Gobierno Autónomo Municipal de
Cochabamba, 23-year-old Brazilian Elton Petronilho was crowned South
American champion with a jump of 16.52 meters. His 31-year-old
compatriot Almir dos Santos claimed silver with 16.39 meters, while 28-
year-old Venezuelan Leodan Torrealba took bronze with 16.05 meters.
Werson, who traveled to Bolivia with national coach Leyhor Tolud, also
competed in the long jump event, finishing ninth overall among twelve
participants. His best jump came on his third attempt, reaching 6.88
meters. He recorded 6.45 meters in his first attempt, while his second
jump was invalid. The long jump gold medal went to Colombian
Arnovis Dalmero (7.96 meters), while Peruvian José Luis Mandros (7.84
meters) took silver, and Uruguayan Emiliano Lasa (7.79 meters) secured
bronze.
This year’s South American Indoor Championships were the largest
edition so far, featuring nearly 200 athletes. Of the thirteen member
nations of the South American Athletics Federation, only Guyana did
not participate. The competition was dominated by Brazil, with both
men’s and women’s teams emerging victorious.
In the men’s category, Brazil topped the standings with 129 points,
seventy more than second-place Venezuela and ninety more than third-
place Argentina. The women’s category saw a similar dominance, with
Brazil winning with 125 points, followed by Bolivia (62) and Argentina
(35).
