Yareli Acevedo Conquers and Shines with World Championship Gold at Santiago 2025

Press Centro Caribe Sports – October 27, 2025.- The Santiago velodrome witnessed an unforgettable scene. Amid tears, emotion, and a Mexican flag waving high, Yareli Acevedo shouted loudly: “Viva México!” She had just made history by winning world championship gold in the points race of the Santiago 2025 World Track Cycling Championships, accumulating 63 points in a day that will forever be etched in the sport’s memory.

The young Mexican cyclist, who months earlier won the gold medal at the Track Cycling Nations Cup in Turkey, delivered an impeccable performance that not only took her to the top of the podium, but also earned the recognition of her rivals and the applause of the Chilean public.

With a total of 63 points, Acevedo, an Accounting and Administration student at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), surpassed two prominent Olympic medalists: Britain’s Anna Morris (58 points) and New Zealand’s Bryony Botha (56 points). Neither could match the pace, strategy, and determination of the cyclist from the capital.

A triumph of the soul

“I’m very happy, very content. I can’t believe it. Only those who know me know everything I went through and suffered. My name is Yareli, after Mexico’s first world champion. My parents named me that the same year she won. Today I repeat history,” she said through tears after the race.

Fate united names and stories: Nancy Llarely Contreras paved the way in 2001; Yareli Acevedo took it up again in 2025. Two women, two generations, one shared passion for leaving their mark on the track.

“This year, the main objective was the World Championships. Everyone knows I’m going all out on the track for my country,” she had said months earlier. The plan worked.

At 24, Yareli is already looking to the future with the same commitment she shows when cycling. With a world gold medal in her hands, she’s now aiming for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, determined to continue making history. “Solid planning has been done, with a committed team. This Olympic cycle will be crucial, and I’m going to give everything for Mexico,” she emphasized.
