Jul 30, 2024

Adriana Diaz, the highest ranked non-Asian tennis player in the world, has shown that this world ranking is more than valid, which is not only a personal milestone, but also for the Caribbean region, leaving a mark in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, being the first time for Puerto Rico that a representative of Table Tennis advances to the Round of 16.

To achieve this, the Puerto Rican defeated the representative of the United States, Amy Wang (4-2) in a close match with scores of 9-11, 7-11, 12-10, 14-12, 11-8 and 11-7.

Diaz said that reaching the Round of 16 for the first time in her career was one of the goals she had set for this Olympic event, and also said she felt more mature for Paris 2024.

The multiple champion of the Central American and Caribbean Games, thanked the support she receives from her compatriots who have visited the competition venue in France, as well as those who are willing to follow her performances via streaming.

“The most that helped me was the thought that there were people in Puerto Rico watching me”, these were part of the tennis player’s statements to the media.

Diaz will play this Wednesday, July 31, against Song Gyong Pyon of the Republic of North Korea, starting at 9:00 a.m., French time.
