Golden Mother: The Heart of Centro Caribe Sports

May 25, 2025

By Helen Acevedo, CCS Correspondent: Being a mother and an elite athlete is no easy task. It requires a constant balance between dedication to family and the discipline of a sports career. In this special month, Centro Caribe Sports pays tribute to some of those exceptional women who proudly represent their countries and have achieved what many consider impossible: succeeding as high-performance athletes while fulfilling one of life’s most demanding and beautiful roles: being mothers.

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (Jamaica)

Known as the “Pocket Rocket,” Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce is a legend of world athletics. After winning multiple Olympic and world medals, she surprised the world by coming back even stronger after becoming a mother.

“My son is my superpower,” said the Jamaican sprinter, who broke barriers by proving that motherhood is no obstacle to high performance. Her example has empowered women around the world, redefining what it means to be a mother and an elite athlete.

María Dimitrova (Dominican Republic)

Recognized for her impeccable career in karate, María Dimitrova is a continental kata icon. Beyond her many medals, her greatest pride is her son and her daughter-in-law, whom she has taught from a young age the value of discipline and respect.

“The best medal I’ve ever won has been my son,” she says. Between training and competitions, María demonstrates that motherhood strengthens her competitive spirit and her sensitivity as a leader.

Mari Leivis Sánchez (Colombia)

Fighter Mari Leivis Sánchez is an example of perseverance. Her career is marked by her unconditional dedication to the sport and to her daughter, who has become her greatest motivation.

“Every fight is for her. I want her to see that there are no limits for a woman, neither in wrestling nor in life,” she says proudly. From Colombia, Mari Leivis inspires a new generation of female athletes who firmly believe in their dreams.

Beatriz Pirón (Dominican Republic)

Weightlifter Beatriz Pirón is synonymous with power and perseverance. She has represented the Dominican Republic in the Olympic, Pan American, and Central American Games, and she has done so with a higher motivation: her son.

Since becoming a mother, Beatriz trains with a clearer purpose: lifting weights and dreams for her children. Her strength is measured not only in weight, but in love.

Natisha Fontánez (Puerto Rico)

Natisha Fontánez has left an indelible mark on Puerto Rican athletics. As a mother, she has learned to run not only toward her athletic goal, but also toward building a decent future for her son.

Recently, Natisha Fontánez won the gold medal in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Liga Atlética Interuniversitaria (LAI), consolidating her position as one of the greatest figures in Puerto Rican athletics. The most impressive aspect was not only her victory, but the context in which she achieved it: at the time, she was breastfeeding her son, Liam, who was waiting for her in the arms of his family at the side of the track.

“My son was my greatest motivation to achieve the dream I’ve always had since I was little. I showed myself that children are no obstacle to achieving what you want… You go after your dreams no matter how difficult it is to be a mother,” she says. Her story resonates strongly in the Caribbean islands and beyond.

Betzabeth Argüello (Venezuela)

Venezuelan Olympian Betzabeth Argüello is synonymous with courage. Her story is woven with sacrifice, demanding training, and the joy of motherhood. In every fight, she carries with her the strength of a mother who never gives up.

“My daughter is my most valuable medal,” she says. Betzabeth conveys through sports the message that being a mother doesn’t limit dreams, but rather multiplies them.

A tribute to all mother

During this Mother’s Month, Centro Caribe Sports pays tribute to all the mothers in the region for their courage, their dedication, and for proudly representing the spirit of Central Caribbean sport. Her story is a reminder that behind every victory is a story of love, effort, and faith.
