Kruz Schembri took gold after a close final that came down to a close call, crowning the Virgin Islands native Pan American gold medalist in Asunción

His journey began in Group A, where he defeated opponents like Cuban Marlon García 5-1. He also defeated Argentine Iván Groupierre 5-2 and Costa Rican Jorge Cabrera 5-2. His next victory was also 5-2 against Mexican Daniel Bravo. In his final group stage match, he bowed out of that stage by defeating Ecuadorian Bayardo Naranjo 5-3.

In the Round of 16, he faced Mexican Daniel Bravo again, this time defeating him 15-5 to advance to the quarterfinals. There, he defeated Chilean Javier Carmona 15-7, earning his place in the semifinals. In the semis, he got even with Panamanian Issac Dorati, defeating him 15-8 to advance to the grand final. In that round, Kruz Schembri and Matheus Stuermer faced each other, with the Virgin Islander emerging victorious 15-7 in a tight start that was later unbalanced after the break.

This was the Virgin Islands’ first medal at these Pan American Games, their only one so far, but it was a gold medal.
