STONA WINS GOLD WITH OLYMPIC RECORD AT PARIS 2024

Jamaica has won its first gold medal of these Olympic Games of Paris 2024 and it was not in the sprint, but in the Discus Throwing event, with Olympic record included, when Roje Stona achieved 70.00 meters in his fourth attempt, leaving the other contenders with no option to beat him.

Stona, who started the series with 61.66 meters, gradually increased the distance, until in the fourth throw, he broke the Olympic record set in the same competition by the Lithuanian, Mykolas Alekna, when in the second opportunity, he placed the discus at 69.97.

This medal represents the first medal for Jamaica in this event in its entire Olympic history, and with this result, the Caribbean country has two historic medals, together with Rajindra Campbell’s medal in the shot put, achieved on August 3.

JAMAICA AND THE OLYMPIC RECORD

With Roje Stona’s 70.00 meters this Wednesday, August 7 in the Discus Throw, Jamaica has now four Olympic records in its possession, which includes the 100 meters for both genders, with Elaine Thompson-Herah, with a time of 10.61 (-0.6), achieved in Tokyo 2020, and Usain Bolt, who timed 9.63 (+1.5) in London 2012, respectively.

Another Olympic record that has Jamaican seal is the men’s 200 meters, with the name of Usain Bolt, who in Beijing 2008 crossed the finish line in 19.30 seconds and a headwind of 0.9 meters/second.

Jamaica has five medals, all in athletics, at the end of the day on Wednesday, August 7, which in addition to Stona’s title, has three silver medals, with Kishane Thompson in the men’s 100 meters, Wayne Pinnock in the men’s long jump and Shanieka Ricketts in the triple jump; and a bronze with Rajindra Campbell in the men’s shot put.
